Changing Seasons

In the early days of our marriage my husband fell in love with the western Pennsylvania mountains, the land of my childhood. As 2009 ended, we bought a 110 year old house nestled in a river valley of those same mountains, hundreds of miles from our home and work.  Now we live with our feet in two states as we renovate our mountain home at the same time we carry on with life-as-usual back east.

Cat and I are in the mountains this week with plumbers  and getting closer to calling this house a home. Autumn is in the air - the first fires are smoldering and patchouli candles burn. Deep jewel tones are on my mind and I dream of pulling woolens from out of season storage when I head back east. Memories of fall seasons as a child fill my thoughts and I revisit the rituals and joys shared with friends and family. When I get home I'll find the perfect pumpkin for carving, and roast the seeds with a sprinkle of olive oil and a grinding of herbs. Until then, I sip spiced tea and breathe.

I pray for my own rest in this season of too much to do, even as nature is slowing her growth and dying back. I pray for grace as I prepare our homes and my soul for the fallow winter ahead with my heart thankful and my spirit quieted.
